Contactless donation boxes for UK charities

Enable fast, secure in-person donations with contactless donation boxes and tap-to-donate terminals. Supporters tap a debit card, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay — and the donation is done in seconds.

Fewer and fewer visitors carry cash: our own research with the Shakespeare Schools Foundation found contactless giving raised five times more than a cash collection from the same audience. A tap-to-donate device at your entrance, exhibit or collection point captures the supporters a cash bucket now misses.

No cash handling. No counting, banking or floats. No complicated setup — devices arrive configured for your cause, and every tap appears in your DONATE reporting alongside your text, web and campaign donations. See how to incorporate contactless giving into your venue for practical placement tips.

Transparent contactless pricing

  • 2.95% per donation for registered charities (5% for non-charity fundraisers) — one of the lowest contactless rates in the UK charity sector.
  • No setup fee to join the DONATE platform.
  • Devices are either purchased once (Static) or rented per event (Rent) — request the order form for current device pricing.
  • Payouts are scheduled and fully reconciled, with reporting by device, location, event and campaign.

Compare that with the full cost of other platforms — including subscription and payout fees — with our platform comparison tool, or see the full pricing page.

Case Study: Vauxhall City Farm

Organisation: Vauxhall City Farm, London

Goal: Replace declining cash donations with a modern, frictionless giving method

The Challenge: Fewer visitors carried physical money, and cash donations were falling. After a successful trial at the 2019 Lambeth Country Show, the farm expanded contactless giving across the site.

The Solution: Permanent contactless donation units installed at key points across the farm, combined with QR codes for visitors who preferred to give via their phone.

The Results

  • £2,974 raised from 2,961 transactions
  • 2,022 contactless donations averaging £6.10 each
  • 533 web donations (18%) averaging £13.21
  • 53% of web donations driven by QR codes
  • Donation levels maintained post-Covid despite reduced visitor capacity

"The true difference has been using the contactless unit back at the farm. We have been astonished by the difference it has made in visitors donating to Vauxhall City Farm."

Tap to Donate FAQs

How much does a contactless donation box cost?

Donations are processed at 2.95% for registered charities (5% for non-charity fundraisers), with no setup fee to join the platform. The tap+DONATE Static unit is a one-off purchase and the tap+DONATE Rent handheld is rented per event — request the order form for current device pricing.

What payments can supporters use on a tap-to-donate device?

Contactless debit and credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The Rent handheld additionally accepts chip and PIN, allowing contactless donations up to £100.

What donation amounts can we set?

The Static unit supports up to three preset amounts up to £30 per tap. The Rent handheld supports five preset amounts, contactless up to £100 plus chip-and-PIN, and open amount entry where enabled.

Can we collect Gift Aid on contactless donations?

Yes. The devices can invite donors to complete a Gift Aid declaration digitally — the Rent unit shows an on-screen QR code — and DONATE then manages the claim to HMRC automatically, adding up to 25% to eligible donations.

Do the devices need mains power or an internet connection?

The Static unit is mains-powered and designed for permanent points of donation such as foyers and galleries. The Rent handheld is battery-powered and portable, built for events, pop-ups and outreach. Both use secure, PCI-compliant connectivity managed for you.

How quickly do we receive the money?

Donations are paid out on a scheduled, fully reconciled basis with reporting by device, location, event and campaign, alongside any text, web and campaign donations you take through DONATE.
