Fundraising during an economic downturn

It is a sad reality that, during an economic downturn, we see need increasing and resources decreasing. Whilst there are greater calls on charities to deliver support, donors themselves too have less disposable cash and adopt a more considered approach to giving. As we move through the next two to three years, charities therefore need to work even harder to make the case for support.

Communication

With donations forecast to drop over the coming months and years it is vital that charities are more direct with communications both in tone and target. Charities must hone and simplify their messages to ensure their target beneficiaries are clearly identified and demonstrate the benefit of their work.

Also important is to allow the donor an opportunity to explain publicly why they are giving. After all, donors talking about their reasons for support are always more compelling than charities asking for support. That is why DONATE™ campaign web pages allow donors to leave public messages as well as requesting for their data to be shared with the organisations they are supporting. We encourage you to in-turn encourage your donors to leave messages.

Finally, and with the economic situation continuing to deteriorate, we encourage you to communicate to donors the benefits to your charity of regular monthly gifts. These can be set up by donors following an initial gift. Do contact us if you need help in setting up regular giving on your DONATE™ campaign pages.

Reducing Costs

Charitable organisations are always looking to reduce operating costs. We support this approach by simplifying the process of setting up fundraising campaigns. As a charity we also keep our costs to a minimum and avoid any monthly charges ensuring that charges are only applied when funds are raised.

Maximise Gift Aid income

The Government’s Gift Aid scheme adds 25% to donations. Encouraging the addition of Gift Aid is a quick and easy way to increase income. DONATE™ makes this even more rewarding with simplified Gift Aid collection on donations made through our services. Ensure you maximise this bonus income at all opportunities. Fundraising creativity

New approaches stand out from the more generic asks for donations. The DONATE™ platform now offers not only regular giving but also text-raffles, auctions, bespoke messaging and much more.

During the pandemic Lockdowns we saw many organisations pivot their events from offline to online engagement. These approaches not only reached new and non-present audiences but also reduced organisational costs. Although audiences are no longer restricted from attending events in person, financial pressures may drive a rise in online attendance during these challenging times.

If you are new to any of these approaches, do read our helpful articles and case studies and don’t remember to contact us directly if you would like advice or guidance.
