DONATE Giving
How supporters donate
What supporters see when they give on a DONATE donation page or by text. Every step from amount to receipt, with Gift Aid, tips and ways to pay.
- Suggested amounts or any amount
- One-off or monthly gifts
- Gift Aid in one tap for UK taxpayers
- An optional tip to DONATE
- Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Direct Debit
- Giving by text
- A thank-you screen and an email receipt
- A message of support on the page
The donation page
Once a campaign is live, its donation page is at easydonate.org followed by its code, such as easydonate.org/XMASTOYS. It works on any phone or computer, with no app to install and no account needed. Supporters can also give by text.
Where supporters give
The page shows the campaign's images, story, target and progress, with a Donate button.
Amount and details
The first panel asks for everything at once: how much, an email address for the receipt, a name and agreement to the terms. The button then shows the amount, such as Donate £25.
Pick an amount
Supporters tap an amount, type their email address and name, and tick I agree to the terms and conditions. With match funding, they see what their gift will be worth.
Or type any amount
Other opens a box for any amount in pounds. The button changes to match, here Donate £40.
Good to know
- The amounts are the ones the charity sets for the campaign, or £5, £10, £15, £25 and £50 if it sets none. Other is always there, so supporters can type any amount.
- A mobile number can go in the email box instead. Without an email address, no receipt email is sent.
- Returning supporters are recognised from their email address. If DONATE already has their name, it says "Welcome back, we have your details on file" and does not ask again.
- Supporters already registered for Gift Aid see "Hi, welcome back! You're already registered for Gift Aid so we can apply it without further details." They are still shown the Gift Aid question. Yes please keeps Gift Aid on, and No thanks takes it off this donation.
- When the campaign has match funding left, a line under the button shows what the gift will be worth, such as "And it will be worth £50.00".
One-off or monthly
If the campaign allows monthly donations, the next question asks whether to make the gift monthly. If the charity has switched monthly giving off, supporters never see this question.
Make it monthly?
Supporters are asked "Would you consider making this a monthly donation?" and answer No thanks or Yes please.
Monthly gifts
- A monthly gift is taken each month by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Direct Debit. PayPal is not offered for monthly gifts.
- A receipt email is sent for every monthly payment.
- Supporters cancel at easydonate.org/login, under Subscriptions. The question on the page says they can cancel any time.
An optional tip
Supporters are then offered a tip for DONATE. It is added on top of their donation, never taken from it, and they can choose No thanks.
Choose a tip, or not
The tip panel names the charity and suggests an amount. Supporters tap Tip with the amount shown, or No thanks.
How the tip is worked out
- The suggested tip is worked out before Gift Aid is asked: for a charity, 4.5 per cent of the donation plus 22p, and for an organisation without charity rates, 5 per cent plus 22p.
- Without Gift Aid, that covers the fee. With Gift Aid the fee is higher, 40 per cent of the Gift Aid plus 22p, so a tip only reduces it. Whatever part of the fee the tip does not cover is taken from the donation.
- Supporters see the suggestion and up to three rounder amounts, such as £1.34, £2, £5 and £10 on a £25 gift.
Gift Aid
UK taxpayers can add Gift Aid, which adds 25 per cent to their donation at no cost to them. When the campaign does not ask for Gift Aid, supporters see Gift Aid is not available for this charity and tap Continue.
Boost the gift by a quarter
The Gift Aid panel shows what the gift becomes, here Boost your donation to £31.25 on a £25 gift, and asks No thanks or Yes please.
The declaration and address
Yes please asks for a house number or name and a postcode, shows the Gift Aid declaration, and needs I agree and confirm I am a UK taxpayer ticked.
Gift Aid rules supporters agree to
- Gift Aid is for a UK taxpayer giving their own money as a gift. It is not for a business's money, or for a payment for a place, a ticket or a raffle ticket.
- The declaration covers this donation, donations in the previous four years and future donations. If the supporter pays less tax than the Gift Aid claimed, they must pay the difference.
- It needs the name and the house number or name and postcode as they appear on the supporter's UK tax return. If the name was not given on the first panel, it is asked for here.
- DONATE claims it and pays it to you with your payout. Do not claim Gift Aid on these payments yourself as well.
- Gift Aid is only claimed for charities.
Paying
The payment step starts with a summary of the gift, then the ways to pay under "Make your donation by:". Payments are taken by Stripe or PayPal: card details never pass through the donation page itself.
Check it and pay
The summary shows £26.34 to be charged, with match funding, Gift Aid and the tip set out. Then the ways to pay, Apple Pay in Safari, Google Pay in Chrome, PayPal for one-off gifts, card and Direct Debit.
Ways to pay
- Card: Visa, Mastercard or American Express, typed into a secure card form.
- Apple Pay and Google Pay: a Donate button above the other options, on phones and browsers where the supporter has a wallet set up. The supporter confirms the payment on their phone.
- PayPal: its own button in the list, for one-off gifts only.
- Direct Debit: sort code and account number. It works for one-off and monthly gifts, and takes about three working days to clear.
The summary
- It lists the donation, the email address, any match funding, Gift Aid and tip.
- You'll be charged is the donation plus the tip.
- When Gift Aid is added, Your donation is worth shows the donation plus Gift Aid and match funding, leaving out the tip. With no tip, it also takes off an estimated fee.
After giving
Once the payment goes through, supporters can leave a message, then see a thank-you on screen, and a receipt arrives by email.
Leave a message
After paying, supporters can leave a message of up to 500 characters, hide their name, and choose whether it shows on the page.
Messages on the page
Public messages show under Comments on the donation page, each with the amount given.
The thank-you screen
Donation complete lists the donation, Gift Aid and tip, then the charity's own thank-you, and a link to easydonate.org/login.
The receipt email
The receipt email starts with the charity's thank-you, then sets out the donation, tip, total charged, Gift Aid and total value, with a Download Receipt button.
Messages and anonymous giving
- The message is optional. I don't want to leave a comment thanks skips it.
- Hide keeps the supporter's name off their message. The screen then says "Your name will not show with your comment."
- Yes, make it public shows the message on the donation page with the amount given, when the campaign displays donor comments. No, keep it private keeps it off the page.
The thank-you and receipt
- The thank-you on screen lists the donation, match funding, Gift Aid and tip, then the charity's web donation response.
- The total at the top of the thank-you adds the tip in, although the tip goes to DONATE, not the charity.
- The receipt email comes from DONATE, hello@nationalfundingscheme.org, with the subject Thank you for your donation!
- It carries the charity's email thank-you message, then the donation, the tip, the total charged, the Gift Aid and match funding and the total value of the gift, and the date.
- Download Receipt opens the supporter's account at easydonate.org/login, where every receipt can be downloaded as a PDF.
- A Direct Debit receipt is sent once the payment clears. Monthly donors get a receipt every month.
Giving by text
Every campaign can also take gifts by text message, with no form to fill in. Supporters text the campaign code, such as XMASTOYS, to the number for the amount they want to give.
The numbers
- £1: text the code to 70201. £3: 70331. £5: 70970. £10: 70191.
- £20, £30 and £40: 70292, 70293 and 70294, once the charity has unlocked premium codes for the campaign.
- The amount is added to the supporter's phone bill, plus their standard network rate for the text.
The replies
- The reply thanks the supporter. When the campaign asks donors for Gift Aid, the reply gives a link to add it. The link opens Add gift aid to your donation for that text donation. Supporters leave This donation is from a business unticked, tick the declaration, and give their name, house name or number, postcode, email address and mobile number.
- For gifts under £20, when the campaign allows monthly donations, a second text invites the supporter to make it monthly by texting back the number it gives. Texting STOP cancels every monthly text gift from that phone.
- Before a campaign first goes live, texts to its code are free tests. The replies still come back, but nobody is charged.
Try it yourself in Preview
A campaign that has never been published is in Preview. Charity staff can go through the whole donation on its preview link, exactly as a supporter would, without paying.
Continue as if paid
In Preview, the payment step shows the summary and a Rehearsal mode panel. Continue as if paid goes on to the thank-you without taking any money.
What Preview does and does not do
- No payment is taken and no donation is recorded. The screen calls it Rehearsal mode.
- The message step is skipped, and no receipt email is sent.
- Preview ends for good the first time the campaign goes live.
What it costs the charity
Supporters pay only their donation and any tip they choose. The charity pays a fee on each donation, shown with the net amount on every donation in the portal.
Fees on each donation
- For a charity, without Gift Aid: 4.5 per cent of the donation plus 22p.
- For a charity, with Gift Aid: 40 per cent of the Gift Aid plus 22p, and no percentage is taken from the donation itself.
- Organisations that are not charities pay 5 per cent plus 22p. Gift Aid is only claimed for charities.
- Text gifts carry the same fees. A small VAT amount on the fee is also deducted.
- A supporter's tip is set against the fee, so less of the fee comes out of the donation, and none when the tip covers the whole fee.
Charges on each payout
- Charges on each payout: a usage fee of £3 for each week (Monday to Sunday) in which your organisation receives £10 or more, and a transfer charge of 0.5 per cent of the payout (at least £3) plus £7.50. Organisations without charity rates pay 1.5 per cent plus £7.50.

Questions
- How is giving on a donation page different from buying a ticket or a raffle ticket?
- A donation is a gift, so a UK taxpayer can add Gift Aid and the charity gets 25 per cent more at no cost to them. A ticket or a raffle ticket is a payment for something, so Gift Aid cannot be added to it.
- Do I need an account to donate?
- No. You only need an email address for your receipt and your name. Your receipts are kept for you at easydonate.org/login.
- How do I cancel a monthly donation?
- Log in at easydonate.org/login and open Subscriptions, then click Cancel. For a monthly gift by text, text STOP. That cancels every monthly text gift from your phone.
- What is the tip for, and do I have to pay it?
- The tip is optional and goes to DONATE, on top of your donation. It is set against the fee on your donation, so less of the fee comes out of your gift. Tap No thanks to give without a tip.
- Can I add Gift Aid if I am giving from my business?
- No. Gift Aid is only for a UK taxpayer's own money given as a gift. Leave Gift Aid off when giving from a business.
- Can I give without my name showing?
- Yes. When you leave a message, tap Hide next to your name, or choose No, keep it private. You can also skip the message.
- Where is my receipt?
- It is emailed to you as soon as your payment goes through, from hello@nationalfundingscheme.org. You can download every receipt as a PDF at easydonate.org/login.
- How much does a text donation cost me?
- The amount you chose, £1, £3, £5, £10 or more, plus your standard network rate for the text. It is added to your phone bill.
- Can I see exactly what my supporters see before I go live?
- Yes. Open your campaign's preview link and give a test donation. The payment step says Rehearsal mode. Tap Continue as if paid and nothing is charged or recorded.
- Which ways to pay can my supporters use?
- Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Direct Debit on the web, plus text giving. PayPal is for one-off gifts only.
- Who claims the Gift Aid on donations?
- DONATE claims it and pays it to you with your payout. Do not claim Gift Aid on these payments yourself as well.
- Can I change the wording supporters see?
- Yes. The web donation response on the thank-you screen and the email thank-you message in the receipt are both yours to write, in the campaign's Content settings. You also choose the amounts, and whether to ask for Gift Aid and monthly giving.
- Does the tip go to my charity?
- No. The tip goes to DONATE. It is set against the fee on that donation, so less comes out of the gift, and nothing when the tip covers the whole fee.
