What is the National Funding Scheme (NFS)?

Supported by major arts and cultural organisations, leading trusts and foundations and the arts councils of England and Scotland, the National Funding Scheme launched a pilot programme in March 2013 and will be launching nationally at the end of the year. The National Portrait Gallery, the National Trust, Phoenix Dance Theatre and the V&A Museum were among the 11 Pathfinder organisations.

What is DONATE?

Supported by major arts and cultural organisations, leading trusts and foundations and the arts councils of England and Scotland, the National Funding Scheme launched a pilot programme in March 2013 and will be launching nationally at the end of the year. The National Portrait Gallery, the National Trust, Phoenix Dance Theatre and the V&A Museum were among the 11 Pathfinder organisations.

How does it work?

Wherever they see the DONATE sign people can make a donation and using the code on the signage specify the organisation that they would like the NFS to pass their donation to. There is no charge to the donor in addition to the donation. The National Funding Scheme (the charity behind DONATE) makes a 4% charge on each donation and Gift Aid payment to cover marketing and other costs to the institution receiving the donation, along with any transaction costs. The full remaining amount goes as a donation to the institution.

How do I donate?

You can donate in 3 ways using signs displayed around the venue:

  • Sending a text message via your mobile device (phone/tablet etc.) using the specific code on the signage.
  • Accessing the DONATE website via your mobile device either by entering a web address or by hovering over the QR code on the signage (you will need to have downloaded a QR scanner app to be able to do this).
  • Holding your mobile device over the Touch symbol on the signage if it supports contactless Near-Field Communication (NFC).

Can I Gift Aid my donation?

DONATE provides a means for NFS to reclaim any Gift Aid. In order for this to happen, the donor must register for Gift Aid when giving through DONATE, but they only need to do this once for donations made through DONATE.

If the donor is a UK higher rate tax payer they can also receive back up to 31.5% of their gift through a tax reclaim so long as they register for Gift Aid.

Where does my money go when I make a donation via DONATE?

Your donation is to the National Funding Scheme and indicates the institution you are supporting as the recipient charity. The National Funding Scheme (the charity behind DONATE) makes a 4% deduction to cover marketing and other costs, along with any transaction costs and then passes the full remainder of the donation to the recipient institution.

How secure is the payment?

Completely secure. All donations via text on a phone are added to your phone-bill, so no credit/debit card details are required for this payment method. For payments made via App or by using contactless Near-Field Communication (NFC) all credit/debit card details are held by one of two world leaders in digital payments – either Barclaycard SmartPay or PayPal. Both of these providers are PCI-compliant (www.pcisecuritystandards.org) and no credit/debit card details are ever held by the NFS.

Can I give any amount when donating via DONATE?

If you’re donating by text you need to choose a donation amount of £3, £5 or £10. If using one of the other mechanisms you can donate any amount of your choosing (with a minimum of £3).
