Launch of tap+DONATE™ Contactless Charity Boxes

DONATE™ introduces contactless charity collection boxes, launching with the Royal Association for Deaf people following a successful trial at the School of Hard Knocks.

DONATE™, the UK's mobile donation charity, has introduced contactless charity boxes, with the Royal Association for Deaf people among the initial launch partners. The product launched following a successful trial conducted in March with School of Hard Knocks.

Product Details

The tap+DONATE™ system comprises two components:

  1. A contactless payment pad that also accepts Chip+PIN transactions
  2. A customisable frame for charity branding

The app enables fundraisers to establish recurring donation amounts, though donors can activate Chip+PIN for larger contributions before the unit reverts to the preset level. The system accepts all major contactless cards.

Banking Integration

DONATE™ arranged a banking partnership with Barclaycard to enable charities to receive funds immediately upon receiving their contactless box - eliminating the need for organisations to establish independent banking acquiring accounts. This removes a significant administrative barrier for smaller charities.

Why Now?

William Makower, Founder Trustee, noted the context for the launch:

"With predictions of a 45% decline in cash usage and a 900% increase in contactless payments, the contactless donation solution addresses urgent charitable fundraising needs."

The direction of travel is clear. Charities that continue to rely solely on cash collections will see their donation income decline as fewer supporters carry cash.

Launch Partner: Royal Association for Deaf People

Dr Jan Sheldon, Chief Executive of the Royal Association for Deaf people, stated that supporters desired quick, seamless donation options when without cash, and that the contactless service fulfilled this requirement effectively.

The product was developed collaboratively: the National Funding Scheme led product design, Barclaycard provided payment technology, Payworks created the app, and the Charities Aid Foundation consulted on the trial.
